A Weekend Getaway – Gateway Canyon

We visited a place in western Colorado we have never been before and you’ve probably never heard of…

For David’s birthday and the long weekend we decided to go to Gateway Colorado and it was wild!  It is just about as far west in Colorado as you can go and boasts a unique and stunning landscape.  Here are a few photos, if you’d like to see…

We stayed at Gateway Canyon Resort and Spa, owned and developed by the founder of the Discovery Channel, John Hendricks.  It is in the middle of nowhere but provides great access to all the wonderful outdoor adventures the area has to offer.

The resort has helicopter rides, a Pro Baja truck course, luxury car rentals, ATVs, and a huge stable for horseback riding.

We kept it simple and took advantage of their system of trails, the spa and our private hot tub with spectacular views.

When we arrived we visited the Adventure Center to see if they could tell us about trails to see petroglyphs and fossilized dinosaur footprints (something the area is known for).  We were a little disappointed when we were told that it is impossible to explain where to see these things and we would have to sign up pay for a guided tour (which didn’t interest us).  Fortunately, a few minutes on Google provided us with suggestions.

Our favorite stop was an easy 2 mile out and back hike starting between mile marker 89 and 90 on Highway 141 (  There was a beautiful view of the valley, Blue Mesa, and remarkably well preserved pre-historic petroglyphs.

We also visited the resort’s car museum which was surprisingly impressive.  The museum features nearly 60 American-made cars exhibited in chronological order.

The cars are impeccably preserved, clearly a labor of love.

The museum’s prized possession is its one-of-a-kind 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 concept car that Hendricks purchased at auction for over $3 million.

We had such a relaxing and fun weekend and hope to visit Gateway Canyon again.  If you ever decide to head that way, don’t hesitate to get in touch for recommendations!
