I love to play with makeup, but I don’t like to wear much, especially on a daily basis. So finding high quality, barely-there products is always a big thing for me.
My whole life I’ve gone back and forth on favourite makeup brands. However now I truly feel like I have found my forever “go-to brand” in Laura Mercier.
Anna and I discovered Laura Mercier about three years ago on a Friday afternoon shopping trip to Holt Renfrew (sort of like Canada’s Neiman Marcus). Anna had read about her tinted moisturizer, so we went to try it out and have the girls at the counter do our makeup before dinner.
We had a ton of fun, loved the makeup and were happily dolled up for our evening. I’ve been a fan of Laura Mercier ever since.
Laura Mercier herself is a French makeup artist. She gained a big following in the 90s for her signature “naturally flawless” makeup looks on celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and Juliette Binoche.
Her products seem to be designed for someone like me: I want to wear some makeup to feel put together, but never want to wear so much that it stands out or has to constantly be retouched. I also find the prices to be reasonable. It’s not as cheap as drugstore makeup, but it’s about ⅔ of the price of some of the other department store brands.
The Laura Mercier website also has some great makeup video tutorials, which I think are fun for inspiration in your daily routine and beyond it.
Here are some of my favourite Laura Mercier products I used for the look above:
–Tinted moisturizer provides great light coverage, plus it has SPF (notice if you buy the bottle in Canada it won’t say “SPF” as apparently they’re not approved to do so because of some whacky Canadian regulation). I wear it in “nude”, sometimes dropping down to “porcelain” in the dark winter months.
–This eyeliner in “espresso” is my favourite go-to. You can wear a thin, slightly smudged line along your upper eyelid for a daytime look, or draw out more of a cat-eye for evening looks.
–This lipliner in “grenadine” is the first one I’ve ever owned and I love it! It’s very smooth and blendable so I find I don’t really need to line my lips but instead lightly apply it as a matte lipstick.
–This lip gloss is my go-to for daily wear with no lipstick or evenings over lipstick. It’s slightly pigmented, doesn’t have a strong smell and is long lasting. I have it in “daiquiri” and “orchid” but I am feeling like I want a glowy summer colour such as “rose gold” or sparkling”.
–These eyeshadow sticks are the easiest eyeshadow I’ve ever used. You simply apply them on your eyelid and smudge them with your finger or let them dry for a bolder look (takes about 15 seconds). They are long-lasting, incredibly easy to apply, and the colours are very natural. I have them in “au naturel”, “copper” and “grey pearl”. Multiple times wearing a thin smudge of “au naturel” people have told me my eyes looked brighter but couldn’t pinpoint that I was wearing eyeshadow – my kind of makeup!
I hope this post has been helpful and if anything you’re inspired to try something a little different with your makeup this week. Do you have one makeup brand that you always turn to? Or perhaps you tend to shop around? We’d love to hear from you!
